AR-15 Bolt Carriers With Protective Surface Treatments
The technology of protecting metal surfaces has come a long way since the AR-15 was adopted by the US military. For reasons of institutional inertia, the military insist on sticking with phosphating as their method of metal protection. That gives a matte appearance for concealment and resists corrosion but it is not the best anti friction surface by far and it provides a key for carbon and other fouling to adhere to. In the civilian arena other materials and coatings have taken off with the aim of reducing friction and the heat it causes, preventing corrosion, prolonging parts life, increasing reliability and making the direct impingement AR much easier to clean.
Fail Zero use an EXO surface treatment which is 40% more wear resistant than chrome plating. It absolutely will not peel, flake, gall or rub off. They claim the Fail Zero AR bolt carrier group has been validated to 50,000 rounds with no lubricant and can be run without the lubrication to which sand and dirt stick, causing abrasion. The extremely low friction surface results in a lot less friction, preventing the weapon heating up. Shot peening is used to polish the surfaces to further reduce friction. This combination means cleaning is a simple matter of brushing the crud off which falls away with each stroke.
JP have a fine record of innovation in firearms component design. With their JP AR-15 bolt carrier they opted to make their carrier from stainless. Counterintuitively, they decided to increase the bearing surface area by over 100% to reduce friction. They then gave the carrier a five step QRP process to reduce friction still further. This results in a shiney black surface. This bolt is intended for real-world tactical applications where reliability is paramount and, although semiauto, has the wide military cocking pad.
DPMS are a major producer of AR components and a lot of experience with metal surface treatments. They offer the DPMS AR-15 bolt carrier group in four different finishes - the usual phosphated/parkerized, retro chrome, ion diamond and titanium nitride. Many think the military should have stuck with chromed carriers and bolts. Chrome is dated, but its corrosion protection and wear characteristics are good and it's easy to clean. The military, however, prioritized concealment. In this day and age, chrome is largely relegated to retro builds. Ion diamond coating puts a molecule thick layer of carbon on steel components. It's cheaper than chrome and gives a military satin matte black finish. Much more expensive is Titanium Nitride or TiN which results in a strange bronze/gold satin finish. This treatment can be hard on the rest of the rifle and some users have complained that it abrades anything not similarly hardened and never wears in. Time will tell
Spray painted bmx bike?
ok this one is for the people in the automotive spraypain industrie
today i painted my bmx bike the fram and forks right
we first sanded it down got all the scratches and nastys off, but not to the bear metal then we sprayed a primer then let it flash for what ever time then we sprayed a 2pack paint over it let that flash then sprayed 2 thick clear coats
now my question is how easily will it scratch off?
we let the paint harden after being baked but i scratched it with my nails to the point where it can come off?
Hooah
yes we did just about everything u said except power washing it, 2 coats of primer, 3 coats of gloss paiint, and 2 clear coats but what i want to know is why its not as hard as a car to scratch off the paint, oh and by the way we used automotive paints
well if you used normal everyday spray paint, then it could very well scratch off completly in a matter of weeks.
What i reccomend doing is to get some specific automotive spray paint
i reccomend this brand
www.duplicolor.com
used it before on my truck and it worked great for me and it will last forever if you prep it right.
If at all possible i would reccomend a good power washing first then sand it down then powerwash again and then spray 2 coats of primer paint on it, and then spray with whatever color your choosing of.
Also a thing to really help out is to get a clear coat and spray it on after your final paint coat.
Hope this helps.
