Did The Welsh Beat The Americans To Be The First to Fly?
Considering the size of Wales, it is amazing that it has enjoyed more than its fair share of inventors and innovators.There are a number of people from Wales who actually claim it was infact a Welshman and not the American Wright brothers who should lay claim to the first ever aviator.
Does his name not ring a bell? Long before activity holidays in Wales were the in thing, Frost got his head out of the clouds and down to the drawing board. This humble Welsh carpenter patented the aeroplane in 1894 and took to the skies in a powered flying machine eight years before the Wright brothers at Kitty Hawk. Many are of the opinion that it was not Orville and Wilbur who made the first manned flight by a heaver-than-air aircraft, but it was in fact Bill.
Bill lived the majority of his life in Saundersfoot, a small village on the Pembrokeshire coast of South Wales and it was during the 1890s that the idea of building a flying machine took a hold of him. Despite any proper education, lack of funds or backing he still managed to build the "Frost Airship Glider" which was a mixture of an airship and a propeller-driver plane.During his maiden flight around the 24th September 1896, he successfully managed to fly approximately 500 metres before having to make a forced landing. It was very unfortunate that the following night a violent storm not only destroyed Bill's machine, but pieces of it were scattered everywhere. It is a great shame, as although the event was witnessed it was never recorded, so apart from local folklore and memories of local villagers there is nothing official.
Although he was just a poor working man, Frost had applied for a patent for his flying machine which was accepted and registered in London on 25th October 1894 under number 1894-20431. Frost unfortunately ran out of money and therefore couldn't afford to renew the patent and so the Americans claimed the glory a mere 4 years later. Today, following heroically in Bill's slipstream, extreme sports fans can find perfect UK activity holidays in Wales with paragliding and hang gliding sites in places like Mynydd Llandygai near Bangor, Conwy Mountain, Harlech, Nant Gwrthryn, Trefor and Temadoc. Snowdonia is one of the best free flying areas in the UK, offering high 'alpine' conditions and excellent XC potential for paraglider and hang glider pilots with no significant airspace restrictions for 100 kms.Could the time be right to "Wright a Wrong" and officially announce that really it should be Bill Frost they are thanking for the thrill of a lifetime!
