Preparing For Unexpected Situations – Car Emergency Kit
We rely on our cars to get us back and forth, either to and from work or on longer trips. Unfortunately, cars often will break down. Be prepared by having an emergency kit when that happens.
Article Resource: Car Emergency Kit - Preparing for unexpected situations
Why you need a car emergency kit
Even if you have OnStar or AAA, you never know when your car will break down. You won’t always have cell phone reception or will have to wait. An emergency car kit will prepare you for whatever you need if anything happens.
What should be in your emergency kit part one
The first things you should include in your car emergency kit are mechanical tools. In a pinch, you will be able to fix the car. Included in these tools are:
- Get jumper cables
- Oil - at least three quarts
- Antifreeze (make sure it's the right type for your car)
- Get some fuses
- Some screwdrivers or multiple bit screwdrivers
- Wire cutters, a pocketknife, and a multi-tool with pliers
- Wrenches or adjustable wrench
- One roll of duct tape
- Pressure gage and emergency tire inflator
- Rope for towing
- Jack and spare tire
Part two of what to put in your emergency kit
Mechanical problems are not the only type that emerge when you are on the road. Your car emergency kit should also include a variety of items to help keep you and your passengers safe and comfortable. These items should include:
- Get a first aid kit
- At least one blanket or sleeping bag
- Flashlight and batteries
- Roll of toilet paper, paper towels or both
- Notepad and pen
- Energy bars or granola bars
- There should be a gallon of water
- Roadside flares
- Have a large tarp
A well packed car emergency kit, although it seems a lot of gear, takes up relatively little space. Store it in the trunk of your car or under one of the seats. A time will come when you will appreciate the time and effort you took to put the kit together.
