"They use a process called autorotation to slow the rate of descent. Pilots practice it." That's what I was talking about. Didn't know the name for it. How exactly does that work?
The people above have no idea about helicopter.
Basically this is something that all helicopter pilots train for - stalled engine.
Basically they let the blade point down ward and let it AUTO ROTATION. The just like a sycamore leaf rotation and falling gently the the helicopter would fall with in reasonable and controllable speed. And just before touch down the pilot flares and safely bring the helicopter to landing.

The blades are turning but the engine is off. It is the downward force and the the wind that keep the blade spinning.

That is the theory. In practice it does crash but not like a rock falling out of the sky.
