ok so i got this new room and i want to put my tv in there, the tv is right now in another room and its not on the wall or anything its connected to the silver hd cable box from comcast on the table. so basically i want to move that tv in my room on the wall i got the mount set up but i dont know how to set up the tv. i mean can detach the cables from the tv take it and move it over it my room but how can i get cable in my room too. we connect the cable from the outside. so is there any way i can move the tv over to my room and get cable w/o asking the comcast people because its like $50 bucks and im like broke lol. so yea...thanks!
Here's what's involved, and you'll need to figure out how to get it done.
1. If the cable distribution in your house doesn't already have a splitter with an available port, you need to add one. That can be done in various places, starting with the cable company's interface panel on an outside wall or in the basement. There are a couple of alternative ways to do that (see below).
2. You then need to run new coaxial cable from the location of the splitter through the walls (and floors if applicable) to wherever you want the cable to appear in your room. If you're going to wall-mount the TV, that will be in a new receptacle box at a location on the wall that's behind the center of the TV when mounted. The cable terminates into an F-connector in a standard wall plate. These parts are readily available in the electrical department of a hardware store.
3. You need to either relocate the cable box from the other room or get a new one from Comcast (for an additional monthly fee). You can put it at some convenient location (a shelf unit, desktop, etc.) close to where the TV will go.
4. You need to get a proper wall mount for your TV and attach it to the wall according to the instructions that come with it. This requires locating the studs (vertical framing members) in the wall and the use of simple hand tools.
5. You'll need to supply an electrical power source for the wall-mounted TV. In most cases (if you want all cables hidden from view) that requires installing a new a.c. receptacle box behind the TV and extending power to it from an existing box. That's a job that requires electrical code compliance and should be done by someone with the necessary experience.
6. You then need to run a signal cable (HDMI preferred) from the cable box, through the wall, and to the rear of the TV when it's mounted on the frame.
Alternatives:
(a) Instead of adding a splitter, you can retire the cable extension in the other room and reuse the cable run that goes there now. It might be possible to re-run the existing cable to your new location.
(b) You can save a lot of in-the-wall wiring challenges by leaving your cables exposed beneath the TV. That might be okay if you park a dresser or something under the TV, thus masking most of the cabling.
