Socket sets provide a mechanic with a wide selection of parts in many sizes, and sets come in small and large varieties. How many pieces you need in a set depends on what you use it for.

In a set, you typically find at least two wrenches, numerous interchangeable heads or sockets and a selection of accessories. Most sets feature a minimum of two wrenches, several sockets, one or more extenders, a converter and a universal joint.

A socket wrench is called a ratchet, and it is a steel shaft with a machined handle and square-shaped drive protruding out the working end at 90 degrees to the shaft. Opposite the drive is a switch that controls the ratcheting mechanism. This is used to change the direction of force. The position of the switch determines the direction of force, and the alternating ratchet mechanism allows you to loosen or tighten a fastener without having to alternate the movement of your hand as with a spanner. Ratchet square drives come in small and large varieties. The male drive end of the ratchet must fit the female end found on a socket. If it does not, you must use a different socket or use a converter.

Cylindrical-shaped sockets have a square-shaped female end to fit over the ratchet drive. The hollow, working end is on the opposite side of the socket. The hollow has either a 6- or a 12-point internal shape. 6-point sockets can only be used on hex nuts or bolts, while 12-point sockets work on square and hex-shaped fasteners. Sockets are gauged in metric, American and imperial measurements. Metric sockets range in size from 3mm to 50mm in diameter. Both shallow and deep sockets are available.

A complete socket set contains a number of other tools as well. These include extension bars which increase the reach of socket, good for hard-to-reach nuts and bolts. To use big-drive sockets with a small-drive ratchet or vice versa, attach a converter. If it is convenient, a universal joint is an articulated adaptor that allows you to bend the wrench while tightening or loosening.
